Dear Jamie Oliver, I just read your ‘Manifesto for School’ document. I think this project of getting rid of junk food by Head teachers in schools will succeed, because the 10 year campaign of smoking worked, and yours will too. Even Tony Blair has agreed to join the ‘Feed Me Better’ campaign, and he is donating £280 million for sorting out this problem. I will continue sharing my ideas with you in what I have liked and things that can help you to improve it. I really admire the project you are setting up. One thing caught my attention: that you have different objectives for each different group. I agree that it would help children in schools, having food technology, so they would learn about food and learning to cook at least 10 healthy meals. They would even share this with their friends. I also think children now should also learn how to cook, because when they grow up and live on their own, they can make themselves their own food and they become more independent, now that they are confident with the new skills. They would be prepared for the essential life skills. Also healthy food would increase their levels of concentration, so it would also help them in their studies and it would be good for school learning. You mention that parents are a key factor to this. I have to strongly agree with you, because parents have to help their children to understand the basics of family cooking and a good nutrition. Sometimes parents also don’t realize what their children are eating or drinking, so they should be aware of it. So I understand this is why sometimes children aren’t getting the right kind of nutrition for their growth. They do not get enough nutrients which affect their brainpower, behavior and ability to concentrate and learn in school. The fact about girls, that 50% of them don’t get enough iron, which affects their IQ. And it worried me to hear of the overweight people. It shocked me when I found out that 46% of men and 32% of women in Britain have obesity problems. If we have fats instead of the nutrients, problems of overweight people will increase, so it’s a good idea to advertise about it. I think you have good points in your ten-year plan, although you could be missing some ideas. There would be the national campaign but besides there could be in the afternoons some classes given by you, inviting children to go twice or even once a week to receive cooking lessons or advice for a healthy diet, but this should be interesting so kids would enjoy it and invite their friends. Also, as you said in the article about new well trained cookery teachers that they are very necessary for this to happen. The teachers have to be educated about what a good food is and be properly trained so all children are taught correctly. The same as all the people need to remember what a good nutrition consists of. Dinner ladies also take an important role, they should also be well trained and well paid. They are buying the fresh, good and cheap products to cook for us to provide us a healthy meal. To sum up my feelings, I am glad you have started this project, although some things are still needed like more government money to provide basic equipment for schools, recruitment and training drive for the teachers, funding more hours for dinner ladies and finally funding this massive campaign. But you know that all the people who support you can raise funds and donate them to this campaign. Good luck!
